A smart lock can have the right features and still be the wrong fit for a door. Use this checklist before ordering hardware, drilling a new opening or scheduling installation. It is designed for homeowners, property managers, dealers, installers and commercial project teams.

1. Photograph the complete opening

  • Exterior face of the closed door
  • Interior face of the closed door
  • Full door edge from top to bottom
  • Existing deadbolt, latch, strike and trim
  • Frame, weather stripping and clearance around the hardware
  • Any manufacturer, fire or certification label

Include one wider photo showing the surrounding opening and close-up photos with a ruler or tape measure visible.

2. Identify the door and frame

  • Door material: wood, metal, fiberglass, aluminum or other
  • Frame material
  • Door thickness
  • Left-hand or right-hand operation as viewed from the appropriate side
  • Inswing or outswing
  • Single door, paired doors or door with sidelites
  • Brand and model, if known

3. Identify the current lock preparation

Single-bore or interconnected preparation

Record the bore diameter, backset and distance from the door edge to the bore center.

Double-bore deadbolt-and-latch preparation

Record both bore diameters, the center-to-center spacing, each backset and clearance between the lock trim and surrounding glass or molding. The FP01 MY26 is intended for compatible double-bore openings.

Mortise or multipoint preparation

Photograph the full edge mechanism and record the faceplate width, faceplate length, backset, handle-to-cylinder spacing and all visible locking points. The FP03 MY26 requires a supported multipoint mortise configuration; appearance alone cannot confirm compatibility.

4. Measure critical dimensions

  • Door thickness
  • Backset
  • Bore diameter or mortise pocket dimensions
  • Center-to-center spacing between bores or hardware centers
  • Door-edge faceplate dimensions
  • Distance to glass, raised panels, trim and weather stripping
  • Available interior and exterior trim clearance
  • Strike location and frame clearance

Use inches or millimeters consistently and photograph each measurement. Do not estimate from a product photo.

5. Check code and opening requirements

  • Fire-rated door or frame label
  • Panic or fire-exit hardware
  • Required free egress
  • Accessibility requirements
  • Door closer or automatic operator
  • Pool, gate, stairwell or other special-use opening
  • Landlord, association, insurer or authority approval

A lock's individual rating does not automatically approve every modification or make the complete opening compliant. Fire-rated, egress and accessibility decisions should be reviewed by qualified project professionals.

6. Define the access workflow

  • Number and type of users
  • Desired access methods: face, fingerprint, PIN, fob, app or key
  • Visitor and temporary-access needs
  • Administrator and credential-removal process
  • Required offline behavior
  • Notification, video or remote-management needs
  • Mechanical-key control and emergency access

7. Confirm power and connectivity

  • Battery type and charging process
  • Person responsible for battery monitoring
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi availability at the door when connected features are needed
  • Emergency-power method
  • Required operation during a network or power interruption

8. Choose a model only after the survey
